IISc tops India at 254 in THE Global Rankings 2027; JMI among 143 Indian universities make list

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has emerged as India’s highest-ranked institution in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027, securing the 254th position globally. India has 143 universities in the latest edition, 15 more than last year, making it the most-represented country in Asia for the second consecutive year.

IISc recorded an overall score of 57.0. Its strongest score among the indicators reported by THE was 98.0 for research environment, while it scored 62.1 for teaching and 58.6 for research quality. Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences followed IISc among Indian institutions, ranking in the 326–350 global band with an overall score between 52.3 and 53.3.

Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences was placed in the 451–500 band. Jamia Millia Islamia and KIIT University were both placed in the 501–550 global band. The five institutions form the top tier of Indian universities listed in the latest ranking. The 2027 edition assessed 2,297 universities across 118 countries and territories.

More than 1,000 Asian institutions featured in the ranking, up from 929 last year, with Asia accounting for 40 universities in the global top 200. THE evaluates research-intensive universities across indicators covering teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry. Globally, the University of Oxford retained the top position for the 11th consecutive year, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
