Higher education in India paying price for being ‘Modified’: Congress

New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) The Congress slammed the Narendra Modi government on Thursday over several institutions of national importance reportedly running with interim heads, saying higher education in India is “paying the price for being Modified”.
Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh shared a media report on X which claimed that India’s premier centrally-run higher education institutions are facing a significant vacuum at the top, with 37 of the 155 institutions of national importance (INIs) currently functioning with interim, in-charge or acting vice-chancellors (VCs) or directors or those with additional charge or on extensions.
In a post on X, Ramesh said, “This is indeed an unacceptable state of affairs — 37 out of 155 Institutions of National Importance do not have a regular, full-time head.” He said 20 of the 48 central universities, 10 of the 25 IIITs, three of the 21 IIMs and three of the 31 NITs do not have a regular, full-time (not on extension) VC or director.
“And when there are regular, full-time VCs/Directors, the less said about a number of them the better,” the Congress leader said.
